the duke of edinburgh's international award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an internationally recognized program for young people age 14 to 24, building their skills to equip them for life and work. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award was founded in 1956 in collaboration with German educationalist Kurt Hahn by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In the past sixty years, millions of young people in over 140 countries have participated and received Awards, with millions more benefiting from its impact in communities around the world.

Students design their own Award program, set their own goals, and record their own progress. They choose a voluntary service, physical recreation activity, skills activity, go on an adventurous journey, and, to achieve a Gold Award, take part in a residential project. The only person they compete against is themselves by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve.

At Silicon Valley International School the Duke of Edinburgh program is integrated in our Physical Education lessons in 9th and 10th Grade, and in our Diploma Core Seminar class in 11th Grade. Students receive support and guidance during selected lesson periods throughout the year, whilst pursuing the bronze award in 9th Grade, the silver award in 10th Grade, and the Gold award in 11th Grade. Whether it be identifying and participating in service-learning, or planning the routes for the hiking and camping on the Adventurous Journey overnight trips, students are supported along the way by our dedicated PE teachers, service-learning coordinator and Dean of Students.

As an IB World School, our students engage in the IB Middle Years Programme Service as Action learning goals and the IB Diploma Programme Creativity, Activity, and Service learning outcomes. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award enhances these IB programmes, offering our students holistic learning experiences beyond the classroom. These experiences are evaluated against IB standards to achieve the learning goals, thereby enriching our students' cultural capital outside the classroom.
